Jed Stein (they/them)

After spending a decade in Montreal getting my undergrad, being an artist and working with unhoused folks, I moved to a small piece of land outside of Golden to homestead, together with my two dogs, where I hope to eventually have a therapy and recovery ranch!

People would describe me as creative, authentic, loving and accepting. Outside of work I am passionate about building community, pottery, bike packing, being in a band, yoga, animals and playing in the backcountry. I love getting to know new people, learning to understand what makes them who they are, and what's getting in their way. Working together to solve these puzzles is such a gift to me.

I’ve heard a lot of stories through my work; you can tell me absolutely anything and I won't be shocked nor will I judge you. I approach each relationship with full acceptance, an open mind and curiosity. I will do my absolute best to make you feel safe, heard, accepted and empowered, so you can reconnect with yourself, explore how trauma or a dysfunctional childhood is affecting you, and heal from the past. Some things I can help you with are:  accepting yourself, getting you out of your head and into your body, reminding you of your innate capacity to heal, navigating challenging relationships, practising setting boundaries, learning how to meet your own needs, and processing emotions. I believe you know what is best for your own healing, and will always respect your boundaries, comfortability, and willingness to go deep emotionally.

I am trained in Somatic Therapy, Internal Family System, Mindfulness CBT, Trauma therapy, and Emotion Focused Couples Counselling. I know that's a lot of jargon, please feel free to ask any questions! Together, these approaches help us understand how your thoughts, emotions, body, relationships and past experiences are connected, so you can heal in a way that feels safe, practical and truly transformative.

I work with teenagers aged 13+, individuals, couples and families at any stage of their journey. I can support people navigating addiction, recovery, codependency, dysfunctional family systems, mental health challenges, relationship issues, trauma symptoms, depression, anxiety, and questions around gender, sexuality and self expression, or anything that is holding you back.

I deeply value decolonization, harm reduction, social justice, and inclusivity. As a queer person, I bring lived experience navigating identity and discrimination, and welcome anyone seeking a space grounded in acceptance and understanding.

Professional Experience

I completed my Masters in Clinical Social Work at the University of Calgary with a specialization in Adult Mental Health and Addictions. My undergraduate degree was in Sociology, where I focused on gender, sexuality and race.

In Montreal I worked with unhoused indigenous folks at a warming shelter and an emergency covid isolation unit. I also worked in Iqaluit, Nunavut at a youth group home. In Calgary, I was a caseworker with newly housed people who use substances, and an intern therapist in a detox/recovery center.

Before finishing my degree and landing in private practice, I was tasked with supporting the Calgary Drop-In Centre to develop a Trans-Friendly shelter where the unhoused trans community can feel safe and supported. My passion is working front-line with clients and community, and I will always be a loud advocate for supporting underserved populations, amplifying their voices and making our communities more inclusive.

Everyday I am so deeply grateful to be able to work, live and enjoy this land I am so privileged to be on. Reconciliation is something I work everyday towards.  Although a small step, I want to honour and acknowledge the history of Golden. The Secwépemc( seh-WEP-uh-muhc)  name for Golden is C7es7ístkten (Tsuh-ess-EE-sht-ken) , which translates to “Winter.” Suggesting Golden was traditionally used during winter seasons by Secwépemc peoples.

This land is unceded, meaning it was never legally given up to the Crown through a treaty or other agreement; it was stolen and colonized. It still belongs to the Ktunaxa (k-too-nah-ha) and Secwépemc (also known as Shuswap) Peoples. Before settlers, these peoples practiced self governance with their laws, oral traditions, and lived off the land and water.

The Ktunaxa have lived in the Kootenay and Columbia River watersheds for over 10,000 years. Their traditional territory spans about 70,000 square kilometres across southeastern BC Alberta, Montana, Washington, and Idaho. For generations, they moved seasonally. The Secwépemc (Shuswap) have lived on Secwépemcúl’ecw, a territory across BC’s interior that includes the Columbia River Valley and the Rockies. The Métis Nation, Columbia River Society is also an active part of these lands today.

I am and will always be a settler on this land we call Canada, and am forever grateful. I am of Irish-catholic and Scottish decent, and my family has been settled in Alberta for 4 generations on both sides. I respect the oral practices, cultures, and traditions that were here long before I came and continue to thrive and shape this land.
